MacLochlainn of Tirconnell DNA

A "Donegal" Cluster?

So far we have 24 McLaughlin samples that match the Ui Neill or NW Irish modal and 9 non-matching samples. Some are 12 marker tests, some 25 marker tests and some are 37 marker tests. We took the 37 marker samples and ran them through the Network phylogenic program with some interesting results. The samples used are listed below.

But even before looking at the phylogenic results we can already see the McLaughlin modal differs in several places from the overall NW Irish or Ui Neill modal.

DYS 458 = 18
DYS 447 = 24
DYS 576 = 17

Out of thirteen 37 marker samples, seven have the above pattern. Another two have DYS458 = 17 but match the last two markers (DYS 447, 576). The other four samples have none of these deviations from the Ui Neill modal.

Network Phylogenic Charts

The phylogenic charts have grouped in one large cluster all of the 37 marker samples containing either 18 or 17 at DYS 458; 24 at DYS 447 and 17 at DYS 576. The remaining four 37 markers samples are quite a genetic distance away and seemingly unrelated to each other as well.

Of the 9 samples grouped together on the left all sharing the same DNA markers which deviate from the Ui Neill modal, two have verified origins in Donegal. A third sample, not included in the chart because it is only 25 markers, also matches at DYS 458 = 18 and DYS 447 = 24. This sample also has verified origins in Donegal and came from the Sorenson Database.

With 3 of the 10 samples matching this genetic pattern having verified origins in Donegal, we believe we are looking at the genetic signature of the MacLochlainn of Tirconnell sept in Ireland. The other non-matching samples would appear to be genetically too distant to be related to this group, all of whom match to within 5 mismatches of 37.

Genetic distance tables seem to confirm the robustness of the cluster of matching McLaughlins. Just to take one example, 9F7N8 with verified origins in Donegal matches 4 in the "Donegal" group at a genetic distance of 3; one at a genetic distance of 2; two at a genetic distance of 4; and one at a genetic distance of 5. All of these are rated as related, probably related, or possibly related in the charts. The other 4 non-matching McLaughlins are between a genetic distance of 8-11 at 37 markers, clearly not closely related.

We appear then to be looking at several groups of McLaughlins in these 37 markers samples; one large group or cluster probably descended from the MacLochlainn sept of Donegal. There may be as many as three other unrelated McLaughlin groups represented in these 37 marker samples. One of these (KPX4T) appears to have a solid paper trail of Ulster in the late 7th century and an origin in Scotland prior to that.

Several of the "Donegal" cluster McLaughlins thought their ancestors came from Scotland and not Ireland. YX39S on Ysearch has an ancestor living in Scotland ca. 1800 but with a census record which states born in Ireland. The McGlothlin sample (Q7KMX on Ysearch) thought his ancestors also came from Scotland but lacks any real documentation. Neither of these have any known connection to Argyll, Scotland, the homeland of the Maclachlan of Scotland clan.

There are only a handful of matches in Ysearch to the DNA pattern evidenced in the "Donegal" cluster discussed above.

It's interesting to say the least and perhaps further support for a McLaughlin "Donegal" cluster that most of the matches are McLaughlins and Dohertys, two septs from the Inishowen Peninsula in Donegal, a territory they both shared for over 700 years. There was also a Kennedy sept native to Donegal, said to descend from the Clan Conchobhar of Magh Ith (Muinter Cennedigh). The Kennedy surname appears in the Barony of Boylagh and Banagh in southern Donegal in the 1659 census. Two of the surnames in the list were either adopted or do not know the surname of their biological father (Bennett and Soakell).

One of the Dohertys in the above list (EX7B7) matches the McLaughlin KA9RY at 36 of 37 markers. The other Doherty (R6RY7) matches 35/37 and is evidently related to the first.

Note: In finding these matches I used a minimal haplotype of DYS 393 = 13; DYS 390 = 25; DYS 19 = 14; DYS 391 = 11; DYS 385b = 13; DYS 389-2 = 29; DYS 447 = 24; DYS 576 = 17. I purposely ignored a few "Ui Neill" markers because I knew a few McLaughlin samples were off modal.

We have also found a few other Donegal surnames that match this modal.

The O'Neills of Ireland need little introduction here. They were the closest kin to the McLaughlins of Donegal. The Gallaghers were also from Donegal, like the O'Dohertys, Cenel Conaill. Granahan, according to MacLysaght, is a Donegal sept. A second matching Kennedy sample appears in the Sorenson database. Donnelly also matches - a Cenel Eoghain surname mostly associated with Tyrone. Devenny (Devany) is mainly found in Donegal and adjacent areas of Connact (MacLysaght).

Conclusions

We have two strong factors pointing to an origin in Donegal for the McLaughlin modal. The first are the matching McLaughlins with verified origins in Donegal. But equally important are the matches among other related Donegal septs such as the O'Dohertys, Gallaghers, Granhan, etc. This particular modal is quite unusual among the Ui Neill matches in public databases; it hardly exists anywhere except in a group of related Ui Neill families in Donegal. While we do not as yet know what a Scottish Maclachlan modal might be - it seems unlikely based on the above that this is any kind of a "Scottish" modal.

It is probably beyond the scope of the present study but we might add that David Wilson (who discovered the Ui Neill modal) recently found a Wilson DNA sample that matched the Ui Neill modal but did not test positive for the SNP M222. This was a surprise since the current assumption among DNA experts is that all who match the Ui Neill modal are M222 positive. The concensus opinion seems to be that the STRs then predate the SNP M222+ mutation. This might eventually have implications for McLaughlin DNA since the Wilson DNA sample also matches the McLaughlin modal.

We have several McLaughlins who match the Donegal modal and have tested postive for M222+. So it is possible that a few who match this unusual modal are not direct descendants of the McLaughlins of Donegal - at least those with other surnames. Out of a database of Ui Neill DNA samples on Ysearch (almost 600 entries) only a handful match our Donegal modal.
