Anthony McMonagle immigrated to Canada prior to 1833, possibly with several brothers, all of whom appear in the Gore Mission records of Peel Co., Ontario. He married Catherine McElwaine, 20 Jan. 1833, at St. Pauls church in Toronto. The 1837 Toronto and Home District Directory shows a Patrick and an Anthony McMonagle living in Toronto Gore, Peel Co., both in concession 9, lot 11. In the 1846/46 Browns Directory of Toronto, a Timothy McMonagle is listed in the same concession (9), lot 10. A Bernard McMonagle is in the same township, concession 11, lot 13.
Four of the children of Anthony McMonagle and Catherine McElwaine appear in the Gore Mission records. This church is known by a variety of names, including St. Patricks (Wildfield), The Fifth Line and the Elmbank church. The cemetery is located on the property of the Toronto airport and is in the process of being relocated.

These are probably McMonagles in both records although the names are badly mangled.
Bernard McMonagle, Timothy McMonagle (Lavinia Dogherty) and John McMonagle all moved to Haldimand Co.,Ontario, some time after 1846. John McMonagle later moved to Port Huron, St. Clair Co. , Michigan.
Anthony McMonagle left Peel Co. Ontario, sometime prior to 1849, because in that year he purchased a land patent in Washington Co., Wisconsin, now part of Ozaukee Co, near Cedarburg. There youngest child, Isabella, was probably born in Cedarburg.
Land Patent 1 Feb. 1848
Certificate 14,814 }
To: Anthony McMonagle of Washington County, Wisconsin
Territory E 1/2 of NE qr of sec. 10 in township 10 North
- 80 acres
This land was next to land purchased earlier by Michael Hickey, the son of Hugh Hickey, and his brothers, Andrew and James, in Cedarburg. By 1855 Anthony McMonagle had moved to Friendship township, Fond du Lac County. A 1862 plat map of Friendship shows Anthony McMonagle holding 120 acres and his son Neill holding 40 acres next door. James Hickey, who had married Rosa, Anthonys oldest daughter, also moved to Friendship township.
In Friendship Anthony McMonagle joined former neighbors in Peel Co., Ontario, some of whom had moved there by 1850, including Charles Carberry and his wife, Mary McDevitt, William Dogherty, William Murray, and Bernard Harkins. By 1855 several other Peel Co. families had arrived as well, including Hugh McDevitt and James Dogherty and his wife, Hannah McDevitt. By 1855 John McLaughlin, the brother of Daniel McLaughlin, was also in Friendship, on a farm next door to that of Anthony and Neill McMonagle.
A descendant of Bernard McMonagle still living in Haldimand Co., Ontario, tells us he once had a record stating the McMonagles were from Conwell parish in Donegal. The record was lost in a computer crash but the reference is undoubtedly to Conwal parish, Donegal, which is adjacent to Kilmacrenan parish and Rathdonnell, where Daniel McLaughlins family lived. Dan Dougherty, Daniels boyhood friend, came from Conwal parish. It is unknown but suspected that at least some of the Peel Co. families who came to Friendship along with Anthony McMonagle were also from the Conwal/Kilmacrenan parish area in Donegal.

Patrick McMonagle was bured in Mount Cavalry Cemetery, Fond du Lac, Wisconsin. His tombstone says he was born Feb. 9,. 1840.
The date for the baptism of a daughter of Anthony and Catherine McMonagle in 1841 matches the year in which we know Julia McMonagle was born in Canada.
Patrick McMonagle was bured in Mount Cavalry Cemetery, Fond du Lac, Wisconsin. His tombstone says he was born Feb. 9,. 1840. This birth date for Patrick is what made the identification of this family in the Gore Mission records possible. It is a perfect match for the Patrick baptised 16 Feb. 1840 at the age of one week in the above records.
